Barnacles Bark at the Sky

The official artwork for the 31st annual Hampton Bay Days festival, the painting depicts a cownose ray carrying the city of Hampton, Virginia on its back and contains a handful of historical landmarks and easter eggs. Captain John Smith, who was stung by one of these rays during his first survey of the Chesapeake Bay on July 17, 1608, can be found being dragged by the giant animal through the water by his sword. The use of the migratory cownose ray served to underscore the delicate balance of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. The piece was also inspired in part by the Turtle Village stage from the 1989 arcade game "Golden Axe".

This original artwork is part of a private collection. Limited edition prints were sold by the city of Hampton locally at the event.
