Sic Semper Mermannis

Translated from Latin, "Thus Always to Mermen" was one in a series of skateboard decks created with premium quality copper-based marine paint (upwards of $200/gallon). This deck was auctioned off for charity at 2017 York Parliament Arts event. The silhouette of a merman skeleton in the traditional burial-at-sea position was painted onto the skateboard deck, then it was sunk in the waters where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean for roughly eight months. The board was removed from the water prior to the exhibition and the area over the skeleton design was cleaned with cotton swabs, then painted with acrylics, leaving the barnacles and algae to dry naturally over several weeks. Over 100 barnacles made this skateboard deck their home from 2016-2017.
